Famous space science fiction actor Walter Koenig, who portrayed Russian Starfleet officer and navigator Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek TV series, has died aged 90.

Representatives for Koenig reportedly confirmed to international media the passing of the US actor, considered a mainstay character on the Starship Enterprise from 1967 to 1969, and 1979 to 1991.

Koenig later portrayed a different character, Alfred Bester, in a separate sci-fi series, Babylon 5, in the mid-1990s.

Representatives for Koenig reportedly confirmed that he has passed while surrounded by his daughter and niece at home in North Hollywood. His performances had left a lasting mark on generations of fans internationally.

Star Trek co-star George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, expressed his sadness about the death on social media via Instagram.

“My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today,” he said.

“Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades.

“When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

“Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.

“Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.

“Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.”
