Blue Origin expands global ground station network with Australia and New Zealand sites

Blue Origin has begun rolling out its Quartz ground communications network, with the first three stations already operational in Australia, New Zealand and Bermuda as the company builds a nine-site global architecture.

Blue Origin has begun the global rollout of its Quartz ground station network, establishing Australia and New Zealand as two of the first locations in a new communications architecture designed to support spacecraft operating across Earth orbit and beyond.

The company said its first three Quartz ground stations have been installed and successfully tested in Australia, New Zealand and Bermuda, with the network expected to expand to nine sites by the end of 2026.

Quartz is intended to address what Blue Origin described as longstanding limitations in the commercial ground communications market, including fragmented infrastructure, limited opportunities for spacecraft to establish contact with ground stations and opaque pricing.

 
 

The first phase uses ground stations equipped with 3.7-metre antennas, supporting S-band and X-band communications for low-Earth orbit missions.

Blue Origin’s Global Network Operations Centre will provide continuous oversight and incident response across the network, creating an integrated architecture that the company said will operate without third-party dependencies.

The initial rollout is being supported by RBC Signals, which is assisting with site surveys, antenna procurement, deployment and hosting as Blue Origin accelerates construction of the network.

Blue Origin intends to progressively bring more of these activities in-house as Quartz expands, increasing the company’s vertical integration of ground infrastructure alongside its growing portfolio of spacecraft and launch systems.

Expanding beyond low-Earth orbit

The next stage of the rollout will introduce significantly larger nine-metre antennas capable of supporting L-, S-, X- and Ka-band communications.

These systems are intended to provide mission data and telemetry, tracking and command services for spacecraft operating across geostationary transfer orbit, geostationary orbit, cislunar space and, ultimately, deeper-space missions.

That expansion is significant because ground infrastructure remains a critical but often overlooked component of space capability.

Satellites can only deliver their full value if operators can reliably communicate with them, download mission data and transmit commands. A globally distributed ground network can increase the frequency and flexibility of those communications while reducing dependence on individual ground stations.

For commercial spacecraft operators, the model could also simplify access to ground infrastructure by providing a single network capable of supporting multiple orbital regimes.

The inclusion of Australia among Quartz’s first operational locations is particularly notable for the country’s developing space sector.

Australia’s geographic position provides access to important orbital trajectories and makes the country an attractive location for space infrastructure, while its established telecommunications, scientific and defence sectors provide a potential foundation for further growth.

The Quartz rollout consequently places Australia within a broader global space communications architecture rather than limiting its role to launch services or individual satellite missions.

Blue Origin is simultaneously expanding its wider space infrastructure portfolio, including its New Glenn launch system, Blue Ring spacecraft and TeraWave satellite communications network.

The company is therefore building an increasingly integrated space ecosystem spanning launch, spacecraft, communications and ground infrastructure.

For Australia, participation in networks such as Quartz could provide opportunities to develop additional sovereign expertise in satellite communications, ground systems, network operations and space-domain infrastructure.

As the number of commercial and government satellites increases, reliable ground connectivity will become increasingly important to the resilience and effectiveness of the global space economy.

Blue Origin’s nine-site Quartz rollout is consequently more than an expansion of ground stations: it represents an effort to build the communications infrastructure required to support a higher-tempo, more distributed and increasingly interconnected space industry.
