Nova Systems backs India’s first human spaceflight mission

Australian defence and engineering firm Nova Systems has partnered with the Indian Space Research Organisation to support India’s first human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan.

This landmark effort will make India the fourth nation to independently send astronauts into space.

Operating from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Nova Systems will deliver project management, ground station engineering and spectrum management services to support the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network.

Nova Systems chief executive Dean Rosenfield said the mission marks a pivotal step in India’s space ambitions, with the company well positioned to contribute decades of experience in space telecommunications and assurance programs across Australia and internationally.

“Following the success of NASA’s Artemis II mission around the moon, Gaganyaan represents a defining moment for India’s space journey,” Rosenfield said.

“We’re proud to bring our expertise to a program of this significance and to support such a major milestone in human spaceflight.”

He said the partnership highlights the strength of Australian capability and the importance of global collaboration in advancing space exploration.

“Working with ISRO and our partners, we’re helping to shape an ambitious and inspiring future in space,” he said.

Nova Systems will work alongside Island Power Co, a key infrastructure services provider in the region, drawing on its experience delivering complex projects in remote environments to ensure reliable, mission-critical support.

The Gaganyaan program will begin with three uncrewed missions, G1, G2 and G3, ahead of the first crewed flight, H1, currently scheduled for 2027.

Nova Systems’ role will span the full mission life cycle, including site establishment, communications support and post-mission demobilisation and restoration at the Cocos (Keeling) Islands ground station.

The collaboration underscores the company’s ongoing focus on supporting complex operations in challenging environments, as well as its broader role in enabling the infrastructure needed for future space missions, including human spaceflight.

Nova Systems also acknowledged the support of the Australian Remote Operations for Space and Earth organisation in facilitating engagement with ISRO.

The company is one of Australia’s largest locally owned defence and security firms, with a global footprint in capability assurance and systems integration.
