Canberra to house European space company

With the release of the government’s space industry capability review imminent, Luxembourg space company Kleos Space has opened its first overseas office in Canberra, to be led by a former Australian Defence Force operator specialist.

The Kleos Space AP office, which will be located in Canberra, will look to capitalise on the Australian government’s recent pledge to invest $500 million to improve Australia’s space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

The space specialist company said it is looking to seize opportunities within the defence industry through its managing director, Erik Tyler, a former ADF operator specialist in communications.

"Tyler served in the Australian Defence Force as an operator specialist in communications, both in country and on active deployment. He will leverage his Defence contacts, as well as his public company and capital market experience to drive the Australian presence for Kleos Space," the company said in a statement.

Kleos Space is planning to publicly list on the Australian Stock Exchange in Spring 2018 and, earlier this year, announced the signature of an authorisation to proceed with GomSpace A/S, part of GomSpace Group AB, on a contract to deliver the first of a total of 20 satellite system constellation.

The data that the Kleos Space satellites gather via geolocated radio transmissions will allow countries to guard borders, protect assets and save lives by delivering global activity-based intelligence and geolocation as a service. The data will be sold for search and rescue, maritime security and regulatory intelligence purposes by users for whom quality geospatial intelligence and signal intelligence is essential. The scouting mission will deliver a daily service with a full constellation delivering near-real-time global observation.
