London calling! South Australian government launches UK landing pad to boost space business

Reporter

South Australian defence and space companies looking to break into the United Kingdom market now have a new base in London, with the state government establishing a dedicated landing pad in partnership with the Office of the Agent General.

The facility, which provides office and boardroom space, is designed to make it easier for local firms to do business in the UK and tap into supply chain opportunities linked to defence and space programs, including under the AUKUS security partnership.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to help South Australian companies expand internationally. Industry delegations, direct engagement with UK government and Defence officials, and the appointment of a Defence Industry Director – UK are all central to the approach.

At least five South Australian enterprises in the defence and space sectors have already set up operations in Britain, with the new London facilities expected to encourage more companies to follow.

Treasurer Stephen Mullighan said the move was another step towards ensuring local industry reaps the benefits of AUKUS.

“The AUKUS agreement is opening the door for increased opportunities with our UK partners,” Mullighan said. “The London landing pad will remove the stress of securing office space in central London, giving South Australian companies a practical base from which to grow.”

Industrial Relations Minister Joe Szakacs said the government was focused on ensuring South Australian businesses had the support needed to compete on the world stage.

“Our Government is committed to ensuring South Australian companies are supported in their endeavours to do business globally, and this is a tangible way we can provide that support in the UK,” Szakacs said.
