US Space Force launches new test and training unit in Colorado

Reporter

The United States Space Force has established a new operational test and training infrastructure unit, standing up System Delta 81 during a ceremony at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs on 9 September.

Part of Space Systems Command (SSC), the Space Force’s acquisition and development arm, System Delta 81 (SYD 81), will provide advanced testing, distributed training and live training ranges to support the Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM). Its mission is to help prepare “Guardians”, the Space Force’s personnel, while validating space capabilities and tactics.

The stand-up and assumption of command ceremony was presided over by Brigadier General Michelle Idle, SSC’s mobilisation assistant to the commander, who oversaw the transfer of authority to Colonel Corey Klopstein, now commanding SYD 81.

Brig Gen Idle said the System Delta framework was designed to better integrate acquisitions with operations, stating, “The framework consolidates and unifies command authorities to foster cohesion, align priorities and optimise the force,” she said.

Col Klopstein emphasised that SYD 81’s role is to ensure front line readiness, saying, “Our mission is to build and deliver capabilities so STARCOM and Space Operations Command can meet their readiness needs,” he said. “We’re focused on ensuring every system is tested, every tactic proven and every Guardian ready.”

SYD 81 will also work closely with partners across the intelligence community, laboratories, federally funded and university-affiliated research centres to accelerate the delivery of new technologies for operational testing, combat training and wargaming exercises.

The new unit includes one system program director (formerly a senior materiel leader) and five system program managers (previously materiel leaders), who will oversee programs designed to support cross-mission tactics, validate weapon system performance and prepare Guardians for future conflict.

System Deltas, including SYD 81, bring SSC’s acquisition organisations under a mission-focused structure. They align with the broader Delta model across the Space Force, which includes STARCOM’s Space Deltas responsible for training, doctrine, wargaming, ranges, aggressors, testing and education.

The alignment is intended to improve readiness, streamline acquisitions and ensure unity of effort across SSC, Space Operations Command and STARCOM. Additional System Deltas are expected to be stood up in the coming weeks.

While some restructuring will occur, the Space Force said minimal staff relocations are expected, and the core missions of SSC and other field commands will remain unchanged.

“The efforts across SYD 81 will ensure our Guardians are equipped with the right tools and able to validate capabilities to enhance combat effectiveness,” Col Klopstein said. “Our team is ready to embrace change and ensure our Guardians are prepared for the challenges ahead.”
