The agreement will support the return of multiple atmospheric re-entry vehicles developed by SpaceWorks and marks another major milestone for the Koonibba Test Range, which has quickly established itself as one of the world’s leading locations for the safe recovery of spacecraft, experimental technologies and high-value payloads returning from orbit.
Under the partnership, Southern Launch will provide a complete suite of mission services, including regulatory approvals, range operations, airspace and maritime coordination, tracking and payload recovery.
Southern Launch chief executive Lloyd Damp said the agreement highlights growing international confidence in Australia’s emerging space infrastructure and the company’s specialist re-entry capabilities.
“SpaceWorks is developing innovative re-entry capsules designed to return payloads manufactured in space back to Earth,” Damp said.
“Southern Launch offers world-leading expertise and infrastructure to support these missions, and we look forward to welcoming their spacecraft back to Earth at the Koonibba Test Range.”
The first mission conducted under the agreement will support SpaceWorks’ Commercial Orbital System for Microgravity Crystallisation demonstration program, which is partially funded through a NASA TechLeap Prize and a NASA Small Business Innovation Research Phase III contract.
The mission forms part of SpaceWorks’ broader effort to commercialise its re-entry device platform, a family of autonomous capsules designed to provide affordable and reliable payload return services from low-Earth orbit.
The technology is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting emerging space industries, particularly in-space manufacturing, scientific research and defence applications that require sensitive materials or experimental payloads to be returned safely to Earth.
SpaceWorks chief executive Dr John Bradford said the partnership provides access to one of the world’s most capable commercial re-entry environments.
“The scale, favourable operating conditions and flexibility of the Koonibba Test Range make it an outstanding location as we bring reliable and cost-effective re-entry and recovery services to market,” Bradford said.
The announcement represents another significant endorsement of the Koonibba Test Range, which has successfully supported multiple orbital re-entry operations over the past year and is increasingly attracting international customers seeking dedicated recovery capabilities.
Operated by Southern Launch in partnership with the Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation, the range has become a key element of Australia’s sovereign space capability and an important contributor to the nation’s growing commercial space sector.
Headquartered in Adelaide, Southern Launch provides end-to-end mission services for orbital launches, hypersonic flight testing, suborbital missions and spacecraft recovery operations. The company operates both the Koonibba Test Range and the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex, positioning South Australia as one of the world’s most versatile commercial spaceflight hubs.
