Trump shared the as-yet unconfirmed design on Truth Social on 7 September, showcasing dramatic flair of dark grey and black uniforms featuring high collars, matching trousers, belts, peaked caps, and high black boots.
The concept is reportedly ‘inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform, modernised for the Guardians of the space domain’, according to the statement.
The post quickly attracted criticism because of its reference to the 1997 film Starship Troopers that deliberately uses fascist-inspired imagery as a satire of militarism and authoritarianism.
The new uniforms have also drawn parallels to the Galactic Empire officers, one of the villains from the sci-fi Star Wars collection.
Whether Trump’s Starship Troopers reference was misunderstood or deliberately provocative, it is now certain that the world is talking about the US Space Force, an often-overlooked military branch of the US.
