Kleos technology passes first US Air Force hurdle

ASX-listed Kleos Space has been awarded a United States Air Force SBIR Phase 1 contract with a focus on “innovative defense-related dual-purpose technologies/solutions with a clear air force stakeholder need” through Ithaca Solutions.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages small businesses to engage in US Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has dual-purpose potential for commercialisation.

The special US Air Force SBIR topics (AF192-001), developed in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory, National Security Innovation Network and AFWERX are experiments designed to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and transition rate of the SBIR program.

Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from broader commercialisation.

Kleos was successful in its presentation of the Kleos’ Scouting Mission under AF192-001 and is participating in the first phase of the program.

Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 23 October, with delivery of a report including technical feasibility, financial sustainability and meeting changing defence needs serving as a gateway to a Phase 2 entry.

The Phase 2 (subject to successful proposal and contract) of the project would be delivered in up to 27 months and with 4-1 matched funds from a government customer, with SBIR funding up to US$1.5 million.

Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialisation. By including qualified small businesses in the nation’s R&D arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the United States gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific research and development needs.
