Space operations American partnership for Aussie consulting firm

Australian-based consulting firm Anywise has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kubos, a US-based space software company, to provide advanced space services to the Australian space industry.

Anywise is an innovative, Melbourne-based small-medium enterprise helping organisations deliver innovative defence capabilities, and supports the mutual growth of Australian SMEs. Anywise provides services with an agile working environment and operates with a wide range of remote expert teams, while delivering value to our clients.

Similarly, Kubos is also an SME based in Denton, Texas, providing tailored software for space services, satellite command and tracking with the expert team working remotely from different corners of the US. Kubos also provides integrated cloud-based packages for ground and mission control systems.

Kubos is offering its mission control system, Major Tom, free to companies affected by the COVID-19 pandemic for 90 days, allowing aerospace businesses to continue working remotely.

Kubos has collaborated with the Royal Thai Air Force, Swiss company RUAG Space and the US government. There is a growing trend in the computing industry of leveraging the growing capabilities of open-source software.

As more large constellations are planned and launched into orbit, more collaborations will happen between large aerospace firms and innovative software companies such as Kubos.

Anywise sees Kubos’ open-source integrated flight software framework beneficial to the Australian aerospace industry as space and technology. This software will play a major role in meeting a range of national and international needs and opportunities, from maritime surveillance and ultra-secure communications to monitoring our natural environment and the resources it provides.

Steve Kouloumendas, general manager of Anywise, explained the importance of the MoU, saying, "Partnering with international companies with similar culture and passion for innovation, provides us access to leading-edge technology and a means to bring that technology to Australian user communities."

It supports international communications with the spacecraft as well as external communications with the ground or other satellites, illustrating the blurred line between cyber space and aerospace.

The Major Tom ground control tool includes a range of features, namely:

  • Track multiple satellites;
  • Telemetry and commanding;
  • File transfer; and

Space is a reliable growth industry that has proven resilient even during economic downturns, such as the global financial crisis. Telecommunications has seen consistent growth over the past decade and several satellite operators have reported record revenues since 2008.
