Grants program set to propel South Australia’s space industry

Reporter

South Australia’s rapidly growing space sector is set for another lift-off, with the launch of the third round of the SA Space Collaboration and Innovation Fund on Tuesday, 23 September 2025.

The latest round will award up to $150,000 each to two projects, continuing the Fund’s push to build a thriving, sustainable and commercially competitive space ecosystem in the state.

This round will focus on the real-world use of space-derived data to tackle pressing challenges on Earth, with funding aimed at projects that show clear potential for commercialisation. Priority areas include:

  • Resources – such as improving efficiency in mining operations.
  • Agriculture – boosting crop yields and farm productivity.
  • Emergency services – for example, bushfire detection and monitoring.
  • Health – improving health outcomes in regional areas or advancing space-based pharmaceutical development.

To qualify, projects must be led by a South Australian-based start-up or small to medium enterprise, though collaborative partnerships with other organisations are encouraged.

South Australian Space Industry Centre (SASIC) chief executive Matt Opie said the fund is a cornerstone of the state’s strategy to expand its space capabilities while driving innovation across other key industries.

“We’re looking for bold, commercially focused ideas that can help cement South Australia’s position as a leader in space-enabled innovation. This round is about harnessing the power of space data to deliver tangible benefits for people, industries and communities here on Earth,” Opie said.

An information session will be held on the same day the application portal opens, 23 September, giving prospective applicants the chance to learn more about the process and selection criteria.

Applications for round three will close at 11:59pm ACDT on Sunday, 2 November 2025. Further details, including how to register for the info session and apply, are available on the SASIC website.
