The Albanese government has launched a new Australian Space Statement, setting out its vision to grow the nation’s sovereign space capability while reinforcing the sector’s role in economic resilience, national security, and advanced manufacturing.
The statement establishes a co-ordinated national framework designed to guide future government decision making, providing greater certainty for industry while strengthening Australia’s position as a reliable international partner in the increasingly strategic space domain.
Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres said the statement reflects the government’s commitment to building a competitive domestic space industry capable of delivering economic opportunities alongside critical national capabilities.
“Space is no longer a niche sector. It underpins communications, navigation, weather forecasting, emergency management, defence capability and scientific research,” Ayres said.
“The Australian Space Statement provides a clear direction for government, industry and researchers to work together to ensure Australia captures the opportunities presented by one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.”
Rather than creating a stand-alone strategy, the statement aligns Australia’s space ambitions with broader national priorities, including the Future Made in Australia agenda, the National Reconstruction Fund, and efforts to expand sovereign industrial capability.
The government has identified the space sector as an increasingly important contributor to Australia’s future economy, supporting highly skilled jobs, innovation, and advanced manufacturing while enabling critical services relied upon by governments, businesses, and the community.
The statement also highlights Australia’s unique competitive advantages, including its geographic location, trusted international relationships, highly skilled workforce, and established expertise in niche areas such as remote operations, robotics, satellite communications, Earth observation, and space-enabled services.
Strengthening collaboration with international partners remains a central theme, with Australia seeking to deepen relationships that support scientific research, commercial opportunities, and national security outcomes.
The government said maintaining sovereign capability in key areas of the space ecosystem will become increasingly important as global competition intensifies and space-based infrastructure becomes more integral to everyday life.
Industry has long said that stable policy settings and clear government direction are essential to attracting private investment into Australia’s emerging space sector, particularly as commercial opportunities continue to expand worldwide.
The statement also reinforces the importance of collaboration between government, industry, universities, and research organisations to accelerate innovation and commercialisation of Australian-developed technologies.
By providing a long-term policy framework, the government aims to encourage greater investment across the sector while supporting Australian companies to compete in international supply chains and develop sovereign capabilities that contribute to both economic prosperity and national resilience.
