The US Space Force has outlined significant progress in overhauling how it develops and procures military space capabilities, with a renewed focus on cutting bureaucracy, embracing commercial innovation and delivering operational capability at the pace demanded by modern conflict.
Speaking at the Space Foundation’s Innovate Space: Global Economic Summit in Seattle, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration Dr Steve Butow said the service was transforming the way it acquires technology to keep pace with an increasingly contested strategic environment.
“The pace of change across our national security environment demands a fundamentally different approach to acquisition,” Butow said.
“Our focus is on delivering capability faster, embracing innovation wherever it exists, and ensuring we remain the partner of choice for the commercial space sector.”
Rather than relying on lengthy, traditional procurement cycles, the Space Force is adopting more agile acquisition models, digital engineering and iterative development to rapidly transition emerging technologies into operational service.
The reforms also seek to make it easier for commercial companies and non-traditional defence suppliers to contribute to national security programs.
“We’re proving that we can move faster without sacrificing accountability,” Butow said.
“By simplifying processes and empowering our acquisition professionals, we’re delivering better outcomes for the warfighter and better value for the taxpayer.”
The reforms reflect a broader recognition that technological superiority alone is no longer sufficient. In an era of rapid innovation, the ability to identify, acquire and field new capabilities ahead of potential adversaries is becoming a decisive strategic advantage.
For Australia, the Space Force’s transformation mirrors many of the priorities outlined in the recently released 2026 Defence Innovation, Science and Technology Strategy, including faster capability development, stronger industry collaboration and greater integration with commercial technology providers.
As space becomes an increasingly contested operational domain, the US experience offers an important lesson for allied nations: maintaining strategic advantage will depend not only on developing cutting-edge technologies, but on reforming the institutions that deliver them. In the race for military advantage, acquisition speed is emerging as a capability in its own right.
