Subsequently, UK-based mission integrator SATELYX, has joined hands with TASA in an effort to provide hardware developers flight heritage without each of them owning individual hardware and spacecrafts. Not only that, the firm has also been named an international co-creation partner of iSPARK.
The three tracks offered by iSPARK
- Physical residency: It gives startups desk space on site, typically for a year or two.
- Virtual residency: As the name suggests, it opens up the mentoring, workshops and international programming to participants without requiring their physical presence in Hsinchu.
- Co-creation partnership: This is the route SATELYX is using as it is built for companies and organisations that already have relevant capability and want to work alongside the resident startup community rather than sit inside it as one.
The last option, more elaborately, is aimed less at churning out early-stage teams and more at getting them investment, customers and a path into the export market, aspects that a number of accelerators focusing on technical development bypass.
In this context, SATELYX’s inclusion is simple, i.e. it seeks to fill in the gaps currently permeating standalone in-orbit demonstrations. Currently, a company with a promising payload can spend heavily just to secure a rideshare slot, integrate with a bus, get licensed, stand up ground comms and operate post-launch, all to validate one piece of hardware.
SATELYX, instead, assembles multiple companies' technology onto a single mission, splits the shared costs of spacecraft, launch and operations across the group, and runs the mission itself end to end. Every payload comes away with its own validation record and flight heritage, with the firm folding the result into what it calls a growing catalog of flight-proven capability.
On the development, Matthew Mappin, SATELYX's co-founder and co-CEO, stated that his company’s Hsinchu placement has been a concerted tech effort rather than a symbolic one to gain prominence within the Asian market. He added:
"The positioning of iSPARK alongside the university, the science park and TASA reflects how we think about building space companies. Universities are where new ideas and technologies emerge; technology clusters are where those ideas become products and companies; and TASA is positioned to help turn that development into commercial space capability. That intersection is exactly where SATELYX wants to work."
The accelerator sits inside a bigger funding story
From the outside looking in, one can see that Taiwan's Third Phase National Space Technology programme now carries a budget exceeding NT$71 billion, to help foster a localized space sector that it touted to become worth NT$500 billion within the next five odd years.
Amidst this, iSPARK has become the commercialisation layer of that spending possibility, turning Taiwan's satellite manufacturing and semiconductor strength into companies with customers, not just research output. Similarly, the SATELYX team comes with its own heavy duty track record, one boasting of aerospace veterans who first worked together in Singapore before forming the company,
To elaborate, the company already operates commercially across Asia-Pacific alongside the UK and Europe, making Taiwan one node in their larger global outlook.
Looking ahead, SATELYX has promised to lay out a comprehensive webinar series for hardware and space companies on when orbital validation is actually necessary versus what can be closed out on the ground, opening with a Space Hub Yorkshire session in September. If that wasn’t enough, talks are also underway with ESA Business Incubation Centres on a European edition, with the firm set to join TASTI 2026, Taiwan’s space science and industry assembly (which is set to run from November 8 to 11 at ICC Tainan).
