The next phase of Australia’s first lunar rover, Roo-ver, has begun with an improved design exhibited across the country’s television networks this week.

Roo-ver, developed by the ELO2 consortium in partnership with the Australian Space Agency, will be carrying NASA technology to test lunar soil on the moon’s south pole region across a 14 Earth-day mission in 2030.

A new Roo-ver prototype is reportedly being tested in realistic lunar environments at Adelaide University’s Extraterrestrial Environment Simulation Covered Regolith Analogue for Testing and Experimental Research Facility, part of the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources.

“The countdown is on for Roo-ver to make its mark on the moon and write a new chapter in Australian history when it travels to the lunar surface with NASA in 2030,” said Enrico Palermo, head of the Australian Space Agency, speaking in August this year.

“Roo-ver will also host a NASA payload designed to analyse lunar regolith, contributing to international efforts to build a sustainable human presence on the moon.”
