Portal Space Systems has signed a contract with SpaceX to launch its Motus Via Sol mission aboard a Falcon 9 rocket in 2028, marking a significant milestone for the emerging spacecraft developer.
The mission will support the first flight of Portal’s Supernova spacecraft and demonstrate the company’s proprietary Flare solar thermal propulsion technology in space.
Motus Via Sol, Latin for “movement with the sun”, will be designed to validate Portal’s approach to highly manoeuvrable spacecraft capable of operating across and between different orbital regimes.
Portal is developing spacecraft intended to offer greater mobility than conventional satellites, allowing operators to rapidly change orbits and reposition assets as mission requirements evolve.
The Supernova platform will use Portal’s Flare solar thermal propulsion system, which harnesses solar energy to heat propellant and generate thrust. The company believes the technology could enable spacecraft to manoeuvre more rapidly while retaining the endurance required for extended operations.
The 2028 Falcon 9 mission represents an important step in Portal’s transition from spacecraft development to operational demonstration.
The agreement also comes amid growing demand for spacecraft capable of conducting manoeuvre, rendezvous and proximity operations, particularly as commercial and government operators seek to build more resilient and responsive space architectures.
Highly manoeuvrable spacecraft could play an increasingly important role in future space operations, allowing satellites to reposition in response to threats, service other spacecraft or operate across multiple orbital environments.
Portal has previously outlined plans for earlier demonstration missions to validate elements of its technology and spacecraft architecture, with the Motus Via Sol mission intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the larger Supernova platform.
Securing a dedicated launch agreement with SpaceX provides Portal with a defined pathway to orbit for the mission at a time when access to established launch services is becoming increasingly competitive.
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 remains one of the world’s most active launch systems, with the company maintaining a high launch cadence across commercial, civil and national security missions.
For Portal, the 2028 launch will provide a critical opportunity to validate whether its propulsion and spacecraft technologies can deliver a new generation of highly mobile orbital platforms.
If successful, the mission could position the company to compete in the emerging market for responsive and manoeuvrable spacecraft, with potential applications spanning commercial, civil and national security space operations.
