BAE expands National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency mission support

The US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has awarded BAE Systems a five-year, US$250 million contract to continue to provide full-motion video advanced analytic services, training, and intelligence production support.

The agreement will also see BAE establish a new Performance Innovation Council to "introduce NGA leaders to new full-motion video (FMV) services, software, systems, platforms and sensors developed by BAE Systems and its program team, made up of several industry leading intelligence and technology companies".

“Our experts play a critical role in analysing multiple FMV feeds to produce actionable intelligence in support of a 24/7 national security mission,” said Peder Jungck, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ intelligence solutions business.

The new council is in line with NGA's Team GEOINT initiative, which encourages "industry, academia, professional organisations and foreign allies to work together and support common technical standards that will enhance intelligence sharing and collaboration".

“Our incredibly strong team includes the world’s largest intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance businesses,” said Jungck.

“Together, we will exchange analytic best practices with our NGA leaders and provide the agency with insights into our respective technology road maps to ensure our future software, platforms and sensors are designed from the start to meet their mission needs.”

The contract was awarded under NGA’s Multi-Intelligence Analytical and Collection Support Services indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract.

The NGA is a federal agency for the US, delivering "world-class geospatial intelligence that provides a decisive advantage to policymakers, warfighters, intelligence professionals and first responders", and is the primary source of geospatial intelligence for the country.

The agency states its roles as:

  1. NGA delivers the strategic intelligence that allows the president and national policymakers to make crucial decisions on counter-terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, global political crises and more.
  2. NGA enables the warfighter to plan missions, gain battlefield superiority, precisely target the adversary and protect military forces.
  3. NGA provides timely warnings to the warfighter and national decision makers by monitoring, analysing and reporting imminent threats. Often, NGA has the only “eyes” focused on global hot spots and can give unique insight into these critical areas.
  4. NGA supports counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, and border and transportation security. NGA supports security planning for special events, such as presidential inaugurations, state visits by foreign leaders, international conferences and major public events (Olympics, Super Bowls, satellite launchings etc).
  5. NGA ensures safety of navigation in the air and on the seas by maintaining the most current information and highest quality services for US military forces and global transport networks.
  6. NGA defends the US against cyber threats by supporting other intelligence agencies with in-depth analysis of cyber networks.
  7. NGA creates and maintains the geospatial foundation data, knowledge and analysis that enable all other missions.
  8. NGA assists humanitarian and disaster relief efforts by working directly with the lead federal agencies responding to fires, floods, earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes or other natural or man-made disasters.
