NASA appoints new CIO to lead agency’s digital transformation

Stephen Kuper

NASA has appointed Sean Gallagher as its new chief information officer (CIO), placing an experienced technology leader in charge of the agency’s entire digital infrastructure modernisation program designed to support and enhance its space exploration missions.

Gallagher’s appointment was made permanent after he had served as acting CIO since January, with NASA confirming he will now oversee the agency’s information technology products, services and systems used across its workforce and mission operations.

NASA deputy administrator Matt Anderson said Gallagher’s leadership has helped strengthen the agency’s technology foundations and provide staff with secure, modern digital tools required to support complex scientific and exploration programs.

“As CIO, Sean will continue advancing the agency’s technology capabilities to support discovery, innovation and mission success across NASA,” Anderson said.

Gallagher brings extensive experience in government technology, defence and mission-critical IT environments. Before taking on the CIO role, he served as NASA’s deputy chief information officer for operations at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, as well as a senior adviser focused on organisational transformation.

In those roles, Gallagher worked across NASA’s centres to improve IT operations, support tens of thousands of users across the United States and internationally and develop more efficient technology models to support agency missions.

Previously, Gallagher served as chief information officer at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, where he led technology initiatives supporting aeronautics, space research, engineering and testing activities. He joined NASA in 2012 as Glenn’s deputy CIO after earlier working at Booz Allen Hamilton supporting federal, defence and commercial technology programs.

Gallagher also brings a military background, having served as a Signal Corps officer in the United States Army. His assignments included leading tactical communications units, managing personnel operations and working as a network engineer supporting military communications capabilities.

NASA said Gallagher’s background in information systems, cyber security, operational technology and organisational transformation would support the agency’s continued push towards modernised digital infrastructure.

The appointment comes as NASA increasingly relies on advanced computing, secure communications networks, cloud technologies and data-intensive systems to support major programs, including human spaceflight, scientific research and future exploration missions.

Gallagher holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from John Carroll University and a master’s degree in computer information systems from the University of Phoenix.

His appointment signals NASA’s continued focus on strengthening the digital backbone required to support the next generation of space exploration and scientific discovery.
