Voyager secures Sandia contract to deliver national security research mission aboard the ISS

Voyager Technologies has been selected by Sandia National Laboratories to manage a national security research mission to the International Space Station in 2027, highlighting growing demand for commercial low-Earth orbit services.

Voyager Technologies has secured a new contract with Sandia National Laboratories to deliver a national security research mission to the International Space Station (ISS), further cementing the company’s position as one of the United States’ leading providers of commercial space infrastructure and mission management services.

Under the agreement, Voyager will oversee every stage of Sandia’s Big Boy demonstration mission, from payload integration and mission planning through to on-orbit operations, with the experiment scheduled to launch to the ISS in 2027.

The award reflects the growing reliance of US government agencies on commercial providers to deliver scientific and national security missions to low-Earth orbit, a trend expected to accelerate as NASA transitions towards commercially operated space stations later this decade.

 
 

Voyager president of space, defence and national security Matt Magaña said the contract demonstrates the company’s ability to provide end-to-end mission management for a diverse range of government, defence and commercial customers.

“Our station-agnostic, integrated approach to mission management enables space access for everyone, from academia and government agencies to civil, commercial and defence industries,” Magaña said.

“Supporting Sandia National Laboratories through every phase of execution from Earth to orbit is another proof point for how we are making America’s presence in space durable, commercially viable and strategically strong.”

As part of the mission, Voyager will provide payload engineering, safety certification, experiment integration, launch manifest coordination, mission planning and operational support throughout the experiment’s deployment aboard the ISS.

The Big Boy payload will be mounted on Voyager’s Nanoracks External Platform (NEL), an external research facility attached to the company’s commercially owned Bishop Airlock module. Bishop remains the only permanently installed commercial module operating aboard the International Space Station and provides government and private-sector customers with dedicated access for external experiments and technology demonstrations.

Voyager plans to expand the platform’s capacity to meet increasing demand, with the first NEL platform scheduled to launch aboard the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s HTV-X2 cargo spacecraft, followed by a second platform in early 2027.

Sandia National Laboratories, one of the United States’ premier national security research institutions, will use the mission to validate advanced parallel sensor technologies designed to improve understanding of lightning emissions, the natural radiation environment in space and the long-term performance of optical systems exposed to the extreme conditions of launch, orbit and atmospheric re-entry.

The demonstration will generate valuable data to support the development of more resilient space-based sensing technologies for future civil, scientific and national security applications.

Beyond the immediate mission, the contract highlights the rapid evolution of the commercial space economy. Companies such as Voyager are increasingly acting as full-service mission integrators, providing the infrastructure, engineering expertise and operational support that once sat almost exclusively within government agencies.

The agreement also reinforces the International Space Station’s continuing role as a critical testbed for advanced technologies ahead of the transition to commercial space stations expected in the 2030s.

By enabling organisations such as Sandia to conduct increasingly sophisticated research in orbit, Voyager is helping build the commercial ecosystem that will underpin the next generation of scientific discovery, national security capability and industrial activity in low-Earth orbit.
