Voyager wins US Space Force contract to advance resilient space communications

Voyager Technologies has secured a contract from the US Space Force to develop advanced space-to-space communications technology, supporting the US push for a resilient, scalable and distributed military data network in orbit.

Voyager Technologies has been awarded a contract by the US Space Force’s Space Systems Command to develop space-to-space communications capabilities designed to strengthen the resilience of the Department of Defense’s space-based data architecture.

The program will focus on developing a flight-ready communications waveform capable of operating across multiple orbital regimes, supporting the Space Force’s broader efforts to establish a resilient data transport architecture capable of connecting military spacecraft and systems across orbit.

Under the contract, Voyager will develop a waveform meeting stringent requirements for spacecraft size, weight, power consumption and operational life. The company will subsequently conduct an on-orbit demonstration to validate the communications capability in space.

 
 

The technology is intended to enable secure communications between tactically connected spacecraft and systems, providing a key building block for the US military’s increasingly distributed space architecture.

The initiative comes as the Space Force accelerates the development of proliferated low-Earth orbit capabilities, with large numbers of interconnected satellites increasingly viewed as essential to maintaining resilient communications, sensing and data transport in the face of potential disruption or attack.

Rather than relying on a small number of highly capable and potentially vulnerable satellites, proliferated architectures distribute capability across larger constellations, allowing networks to continue operating even when individual spacecraft are degraded or lost.

Voyager said its ability to manufacture space-qualified electronics at scale would be central to meeting the Space Force’s requirements as the US military expands its orbital data networks.

“The system we’re developing will securely connect tactically linked spacecraft and systems across every orbit, but the best technology only changes the game if the government can afford to field it at speed and scale,” said Matt Magaña, president of space, defence and national security at Voyager.

“Our ability to deliver commercially with manufacturing capacity, transparent pricing and cost predictability is critical as the Space Force scales their data network.”

The program builds on Voyager’s existing experience developing advanced spacecraft electronics and communications technologies, including radiation-hardened systems, precision radio-frequency payloads and flight-proven on-orbit electronics.

These technologies have been deployed across multiple space missions, providing Voyager with an established foundation for developing communications systems capable of operating in the demanding space environment.

The Space Force has increasingly prioritised resilient, interconnected satellite architectures as the US military seeks to maintain assured access to communications and data in contested space environments.

Space-to-space communications are a critical component of that architecture, allowing spacecraft to exchange information directly and potentially reducing reliance on ground infrastructure and vulnerable communications links.

The Voyager program will therefore contribute to the broader evolution of the US military’s space architecture towards a more distributed, interconnected and resilient network capable of supporting operations across multiple orbital regimes.

The forthcoming on-orbit demonstration will provide an important test of the technology’s ability to transition from development into an operationally relevant space communications capability.
