Aussie space firm Spiral Blue secures UK defence LiDAR export to boost bilateral ‘space bridge’

Stephen Kuper

Australian space technology company Spiral Blue has secured its first international export of a space-grade LiDAR system, delivering the capability to UK partner Lodestar Space in a move set to strengthen the growing Australia–UK space relationship.

The milestone sale signals rising global demand for advanced LiDAR solutions and marks a shift for Spiral Blue towards sustained international revenue streams. With the first unit now delivered, the company is fast-tracking development of a next-generation system tailored to meet Lodestar’s evolving operational requirements.

The delivery also represents a key step in Spiral Blue’s broader technical roadmap, particularly its ambition to develop high-altitude, space-to-Earth LiDAR capable of generating near real-time, three-dimensional mapping of the planet.

Under the partnership, Lodestar Space will integrate Spiral Blue’s LiDAR suite into its own platforms to support space-to-space applications, including the monitoring and protection of critical orbital infrastructure.

Spiral Blue chief executive Taofiq Huq said the export marked an important early achievement in a longer journey.

“While this is one small step for us on a long journey to building LiDAR in space for Earth observation, it was critically important that we absolutely nailed this first step – and nailed it we have,” he said.

Lodestar Space chief technology officer Thomas Santini said the integration had reduced risk in delivering advanced in-orbit capabilities. “Following the integration of Spiral Blue’s LiDAR into our sensor stack, we have de-risked a crucial element in delivering persistent, co-orbital capabilities to safeguard critical orbital infrastructure,” he said.

Spiral Blue is already progressing the next phase of its LiDAR development program, with a higher-performance system capable of multi-kilometre scanning ranges expected to be completed in the coming weeks. The enhanced capability is set to significantly expand operational scope for Lodestar Space and further advance Spiral Blue’s push into long-range orbital sensing.

The company is focused on delivering space-based LiDAR for global geospatial intelligence, including applications such as vegetation penetration and high-resolution 3D mapping.

Spiral Blue's technology builds on expertise in space edge computing and machine learning, allowing large volumes of data to be processed in orbit before being transmitted to Earth.

To date, Spiral Blue has launched 10 space edge computing systems and delivered multiple geospatial intelligence contracts using artificial intelligence, as it works to make advanced Earth observation data more accessible, actionable and affordable.
