Nova Systems commissions Cocos space tracking station to support India’s first human spaceflight mission

Nova Systems has commissioned a satellite tracking ground station on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, delivering critical infrastructure to support the Indian Space Research Organisation’s landmark Gaganyaan human spaceflight program.

Australian defence and engineering company Nova Systems has successfully commissioned a satellite tracking ground station on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, marking a significant milestone in support of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) ambitious Gaganyaan human spaceflight program.

The newly commissioned facility forms part of ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command network and will provide critical communications and tracking support for future Gaganyaan missions as India prepares to launch its first astronauts into space.

Strategically positioned in the Indian Ocean, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands ground station will extend mission coverage during key phases of flight, supporting ISRO’s objective of sending a crew of three astronauts into a 400-kilometre low-Earth orbit for a three-day mission before returning safely via splashdown in Indian waters.

Nova Systems led project management for the development and commissioning of the facility and will continue supporting the capability through future mission phases, coordinating ongoing activities associated with the complex infrastructure in one of Australia’s most remote locations.

Nova Systems chief executive Officer Dean Rosenfield said commissioning the facility represented a major achievement for the project team and highlighted Australia’s growing contribution to international space programs.

“The successful delivery of this facility is a significant achievement for the project team and an important milestone in support of one of the most ambitious space programs currently underway anywhere in the world,” Rosenfield said.

“We are proud to work alongside ISRO and local partners to deliver critical ground infrastructure that will help enable India’s first human spaceflight mission.”

He said the project also demonstrated the strength of Australia’s sovereign space capabilities and the value of international collaboration in advancing human spaceflight.

“This project showcases the depth of Australian capability in space systems, infrastructure delivery and mission assurance, while highlighting the value of international collaboration in advancing human spaceflight.”

The project leveraged Nova Systems’ expertise in project management, space telecommunications, systems assurance and remote operations to successfully deliver the capability despite the logistical challenges associated with the isolated island environment.

The commissioning reflects the growing strategic partnership between Australia and India in space, science and technology and follows continued collaboration between the two nations to strengthen regional space capabilities.

Nova Systems welcomed the joint announcement by the prime ministers of Australia and India recognising the commissioning of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands tracking facility, describing the project as a demonstration of Australian industry’s ability to deliver mission-critical infrastructure supporting internationally significant space programs.

The successful delivery further reinforces Nova Systems’ position as a trusted partner for complex space infrastructure and mission-critical programs across Australia and internationally, while highlighting the expanding role Australian industry is playing in enabling the next generation of global space exploration.
