The statement highlighted the growing importance of space to modern military operations, underpinning communications, navigation, intelligence, surveillance and command and control.
As the strategic environment becomes more complex, New Zealand and Australia will continue to work together to maximise combined capability and protect their shared interests, according to the statement.
The agreement, signed by RNZAF Air Component Commander Air Commodore Andy Scott and ADF Space Commander Major General Greg Novak, following inaugural space talks in Wellington recently, reinforces the longstanding Anzac partnership with Australia and reflects a shared commitment to delivering practical outcomes through closer cooperation in the space domain.
Key objectives set out in the statement include building personnel interchangeability, capability integration, operational readiness and working together on a domain approach to space operations.
AIRCDRE Scott said military space operations were a rapidly expanding area of development.
“Last year the RNZAF stood up No. 62 Squadron, our first dedicated space unit, with a focus on understanding space activity,” he said.
“It was a landmark step into the international arena, and this is another; we will be working closely with our ally Australia to establish new standards for international defence collaboration.”
MAJGEN Novak said the agreement highlights the growing importance of trusted partnerships in delivering operational advantage.
“This statement provides a practical framework for growing our shared expertise, enhancing interoperability and developing the next generation of military space professionals.”
